　

　

　Design is a creative activity conducted in order to satisfy a human need in a limited amount of space under specified material circumstances.

　　Teaching design is basically a type of professional training integrating technology. It encompasses a wide range of courses from the theory and application of sociology, humanities, nature, economics and engineering skills. These are knowledge fields that cannot be disregarded in an education in design. Therefore, the College of Design in the University was created on August 1, 1997 in order to integrate design-related departments, increase sharing of resources, effectively use space and raise competitiveness.

　

　

　　The College of Design was established in August 1997. It focuses on skillful intervention for designers to enhance knowledge of the interacting social, cultural, natural, economic and technological factors, and design ability consisting of the capacity to identify, analyze and solve problems in a creative way. We currently have four departments: Architecture, Industrial Design, Visual Communication Design, Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture, and have master's programs in Architecture and Urban Design. In 2001, we start to offer a PhD program in Architecture and Urban Design and master's program in Design, and has a Split Mode PhD program between the University of Canberra and CYUT since 2003.

The educational philosophy of the college is "the creature thinking shall be integrated with progressive technology". It has aimed at implementing "computerizing learning," "liberal-minded thinking," "community motivated design," "deepened intellectual pursuit." Accordingly, that the higher standard of the basic courses of each department has been vigorously demanded, the more computer aid learning has been widely implemented. Apprenticeship has been strictly enforced. Besides intracurriculum class, the college has been very active in inter-universities corporative projects, holding seminars in various issues that are currently developed in the creative field and subject of academic significance. The College also implements the sandwiched educational plans, which make the arrangement of courses more suitable to student of different background and personalities.

The College full-time faculty number 52 including 3 professors, 13 associate professors, 12 assistant professors, and 24 lecturers; with doctoral degree holders number 18 and master's degree holders number 34; total students in the College number 1,367.

　　Due to the diverse backgrounds of the students and the diverse areas of study, the design of the courses in the each department can both meet the needs of an education in design and suit students’ different backgrounds. Students in different departments can choose a specialization program that best fits their background, interests and the career that they wish to pursue under the guidance of an advisor. We hope that this flexible program design will allow every student to effectively develop his or her learning and research potential.

	Holistic Education
	Teaching design is basically a type of professional training integrating technology. It encompasses a wide range of courses from the theory and application of sociology, humanities, nature, economics and engineering skills. These are knowledge areas that cannot be disregarded in an education in design. 　　Thus, an education in design should include professional training, practical ability and humanistic cultivation (figure 1). These are basic requirements of an education in design. Students must understand democracy and the legal process, possess fitting moral qualities and a notion of social justice, understand a designer’s professional morality and social responsibilities, possess the ability to integrate theory and practice, obey rules, and be humble, diligent, helpful, truthful and innovative. (Figure 2).

	Students in different departments can choose a specialization program that best fits their background, interests and the career path that they wish to pursue under the guidance of an advisor. We hope that this flexible program design will allow every student to effectively develop his or her learning and research potential (figure 2). Specialization programs allow students in different departments, with different backgrounds and with different interests to effectively learn knowledge and skills in design, manufacturing and management. Specialization programs also allow students to develop the integrated skills of thinking independently and analyzing issues. In order to share teaching resources, the basic design and art and design courses have become the core curriculum of the College. Students learn design techniques and methods of different departments, expand their knowledge fields and raise the level of design education. Besides the required courses offered by the different departments, the Department of Architecture has the three professional specialization programs of Planning and Design, Technology and Management, Environmental Control and Facilities. The Department of Industrial Design has the two specialization programs of Daily Products Design and Industrial Design. The Department of Visual Communications Design has the three specialization programs of Graphics and Text Visual Design, Design Planning and Applications, Digital Media Design. The Department of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture has the four specialization programs of Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Land Development and Real Estate and Computer Applications. The Graduate institute of Architecture and Urban Design offers the four Master’s programs of Architecture, Urban Design and Architectural Design and a doctoral program in Design Science. The Graduate institute of Design offers the two Master’s programs in Industrial Design and Visual Communications Design. In addition, the College has two other professional specialization programs in Interior Design and Computer Animation so that students can learn a second specialization (figure 3).



	Cultivation of Professional Skills
	Departments of our College have been continuously deepening the coverage of course content and improving their teaching methods. They have modified and reconstructed courses and fields of study to revitalize the cultivation of design professionals. We require that students be hard-working, enthusiastic, realistic and innovative in their design courses. We hope to use design, manufacturing and management as the foundation on which students apply the knowledge they acquired to solve practical design problems and to improve their design skills. We hope that our students can gain the professional skills of acquiring new knowledge and analyzing and solving problems as well as fully unleashing their creativity. In the recent five years, our students have participated in national design contests and collectively won approximately 180 awards.

	Five Education Objectives
	Our college’s education policies are as follows: “deepen the education, ” “implement more general thinking,” “design with a community sense” and “learn with computers.” In order not to overlap with the courses taken in the vocational schools and to improve on vertical connection of courses , departments of this college deepen their teaching contents, strengthen the learning wills of the students so teaching can become more effective. Students from our college apart from taking general courses required by the university to expand their knowledge, and develop their personalities and gain an understanding of the meaning of life also need to take college common courses. 　　 The university is located in the central part of Taiwan. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the socio-economic development of the local area and take more care of the local industries’ management. Most student’s practices are related to community infrastructures in order to upgrade overall environmental quality. To match up with the emerg ence of the age of information, our college requires all students to equip with computer aided design skills and to familiarize themselves with software used in designing .

	”Sandwich” Internship Project
	This College adopts the educational methods practiced in the European vocational schools. Each department establishes strategic alliance with organizations or college of design businesses to cultivate professional designers with knowledge and skills that meet the industry’s needs. 　　 All departments adopt the “sandwich” internship project which requires the students to go and take an internship in an allied organization during the summer vacation or at least two days a week in their second semester of their third year. This project can allow the students to have more hands-on experience, strengthen the relationship of theory and practice and improve the student’s professional knowledge and skills of design.

	2	Design Aesthetics	This course intends to build up students’ competence in aesthetic judgment. It is expected that the students will be able to identify the nature and properties of the aesthetic artifacts and livings, and to understand how people may sense the aesthetics in things. Finally, this course attempt to increase their esthetic design capacity.
	2	Green Design	This curriculum is an elective course for the students of the College of Design. The goals are to cultivate crossing fields green design talents, to promote professional design abilities, to establish basic knowledge of green design from different fields. Therefore, the integration of architecture, industry design, visual communication, and urban planning and landscape in green design carries out the crossing fields teaching and learning.
