About Us

Welcome to Chaoyang Construction Engineering!

Welcome to the Department of Construction Engineering at Chaoyang University of Technology, a young but prospective department among civil/construction engineering institutions in Taiwan. We offer solid theoretical and practical courses in the graduate and undergraduate programs to educate our students to be engineering leaders in this nation. The department has been accredited by the IEET (ABET equivalent) since 2005.

Department of Construction Engineering, establishing in 1994, currently offers Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees. There are 21 fulltime faculties, 50 graduated students, and 500 undergraduate students. The department has two service centers and 13 specialized laboratories with a total area over 2,600 square meters. The service center - CNDT (center for Non-Destructive Testing) been promoted to university level R&D center has the annual commissioned budget averages ten million NT dollars.

As the Department aims on cultivating advanced construction engineering and management professionals, equal emphasis is placed on practical training and theoretical study throughout the academic program. In order to meet the demands of the industry for qualified personnel, and to enhance students' professional skills, a wide variety of engineering instruments, equipment, materials, and machines are used within the curriculum for hands-on training. Students are also required to attain extracurricular summer internships to familiarize themselves with environment of construction site and office. Respective professionals from construction related firms or organizations are invited as instructors for certain practical courses, such as Building Information Modeling, MEP Design and Collaboration, Working Drawing, and Construction Methods, etc. These efforts will enhance students' competitiveness in the job market.

Area of Specialties

The teaching and research activities of our faculties can be classified into three major groups: structural and material engineering, geotechnical engineering, and construction management, with an emphasis on the nondestructive evaluation. The research interest of the faculties can be found in Facaulty.

Structural and Material Engineering

Main topics in the structural and material engineering group include investigations of loads and load combinations, calculation of internal forces and stresses, characterization of structural materials and members, and structural behavior. In additional to these traditional topics, versatile research topics such as behavior of cold-formed steel structure, non-destructive test (NDT) for concrete structures, assessment and repair of concrete cracks, special purpose concrete materials, and green building materials were also studied in depth. Recently, the ditch cover made by steel-fiber and reactive powder concrete based material invented by Professor Ming-Gin Lee was honored by the silver medal in the 2007 Taipei international invention show. Most of the research projects were accomplished in the well equipped Material and Structural Laboratories. The major apparatus in the labs includes 8 m x 7.2 m x 1m reaction wall, 50 ton-MTS system, 135 ton, 10-m-tall compressive machine, 200 Ton universal test machine, temperature/humidity controlled chamber, temperature controlled chambers, and concrete creep tester, etc.

Geotechnical Engineering

The main activities in the geotechnical group include: soil mechanic and foundation engineering; soil dynamics, natural hazard mitigation techniques related to earthquake, flood, debris/mud flow control; the application of soil and rock mechanics principles to the evaluation, design and construction of structures in and on soil or rock, including design of anchor systems, and site improvement techniques; nondestructive integrity evaluation of driven piles and drilled shafts; and geophysical site investigation by stress wave propagation techniques.

Construction Management

The research topics in the construction management group include: 1.engineering Law, 2.procurement system of public sector construction projects, 3.planning and development of industrial parks, 4.dynamic risk management in construction projects, 5.effective simulation mechanism for construction operations, 6.optimization of construction operations, 7.exploring the spatial information from given imagery visualizing the analyzed data by different mathematic methods, 8.analyzing the collected spatial data and applying the data in spatial information system, 9.construction simulation, 10.labor workload and ergonomics, and 11.artificial intelligence (AI). Construction management provides students with the best possible education and help students to ready for the diversity job market or to enter graduate school.

Center of Nondestructive Evaluation

Nondestructive evaluation is an integration o f different technologies. The safety assessment of aging infrastructures requires the understanding of mechanics, materials science, and measurement techniques. This has been the research focus of the Department of Construction Engineering at CYUT. The Center for NDT (CNDT) was established in 2005. A cluster of advanced testing apparatus is managed by CNDT. These facilities are suitable for experimental researches involving nondestructive evaluation of materials in structures, in-place estimation of concrete strength, vibration based assessment for bridges, and geotechnical nondestructive testing. There are currently five professors working in the related research fields. Multi-million NT dollars of funds from government research grants as well as industrial cooperative projects are received each year. Major apparatus of the CNDT are described in the CNDT website.
