Fun Fun with Fish and Chips(2005年2月∼2005年3月)☆

This week, we are talking about the
United Kingdom.
There are lots of different names for this country. Just like “Taiwan”
is also the “Republic of China.” Other names for the
United Kingdom
are “U.K.”,
“Great
Britain”
, and sometimes “England.”
This country is a small island like Taiwan, but it is very far away from
here. |
Today in class we are going to make “fish and chips.” They are
good to eat together, and lots of people in England like to eat them.
In America, we say “chips” are “french fries.” But in the
U.K., “potato chips” are called “crisps.” We can use
potatoes to make both things, but they are a little different.

Look at these huge potatoes! They are very big, and that is good
because we have a lot of chips to make. I want to use the
biggest potatoes, so I am asking the students to help me choose the best
ones. If we are going to make fish and chips for 22 people, we need a
lot of potatoes. I used 8 big ones for our snack
|
To cut the potatoes, we need to use a knife. Knives are very
useful tools, but they can also be dangerous if we are not
careful. This knife is very sharp, and because it is so big, I
think I will cut the potatoes by myself. I don’t want anybody to get
hurt. And don’t forget: if you drop a knife, don’t try to catch it!

To
make fish and chips, we need a few more tools. Of course we need the
knife to cut the potatoes. We also need:
A
pot – to cook the french fries (chips) in.
A
frying pan – to cook the fish in
A
cutting board – to cut the potatoes on

stoves – to heat the food and cook it.
And, for eating, we also have some salt, pepper, and
ketchup. |
The
stove needs a gas can. Help! I can’t get this thing in the
stove! If I can’t fix it, we can’t cook. Hmmm…It’s not empty.
I’ll try to fix it one more time…OK. Now it’s fixed. The stove is
finally ready for cooking.

Because we are cooking with oil, we need to be careful. Hot oil can be
messy and dangerous. If we make a mess and get oil on the floor, it
will be very slippery. And before we start cooking, we need to
heat up the oil in the pot, because the chips will cook faster if the
oil is already hot.

Right now, the oil is not hot yet. I wanted everyone to see how it
looks when it is not hot. When it gets hot, it will boil and bubble and
we will have to stand back and be very careful.

Now we can cut the potatoes. We have to cut them just the right size.
If we cut them too small, they will cook very quickly but they will be
hard to eat with our fingers. But if we cut them too big, they will
take too long to cook and they will also be very soggy. I want our
chips to look like the picture in our book, so I try to cut them the
same way.

Try this! If you eat a raw potato, it does not taste good. But,
if you hold your nose, you can not taste it at all. Why is that?
Because you also use your nose to taste your food. If you can’t smell
it, you also can’t taste it. Everybody tried a little piece, but I’m
sad to say everyone thought it was yucky. |

Now we can cook the chips. They are cooking nicely in the pot, but we
need to stir them around a little bit so that they do not stick together
or burn. We need to use a long metal spoon to stir the chips. It’s all
much too hot to touch, so we also need to be very careful. Everyone is
helping me out a little bit while I get the fish ready to cook.

Now we can cook the fish. Yikes! The oil is too hot, and there is a
lot of ice on the fish. When that happens, the oil splatters everywhere
and makes a mess. Oops. That was my mistake. Now we need to
wait for the oil to cool down a little, and then we can try again. Most
English people like to eat big pieces of fish, but I thought we
could just use these little pieces because we shouldn’t eat too much
junk food before lunch. |

OK.. Now everything is almost ready. The fish is cooking nicely, and
everyone is helping to stir the chips. Just pick them up and turn them
over a little bit… In just a few more minutes, it will all be
finished, and we can try it. |
Finally! Everything is finished, and we can eat! How does it taste?
Well, there is salt, so it tastes salty. There is also
some pepper, so it tastes a little spicy, too. And is it
good to eat? Yes, it’s good to eat! And as soon as we finish
our fish and chips, we can eat our lunch. What a great day! We’ve been
cooking and eating all morning.
