☆主題活動：Happy Mother’s Day(2005年5月2日∼2005年5月6日)☆

        When Mother’s Day is coming, you should think about what is a good present to give your mommy.  Lots of mommies like flowers, many mommies like chocolate.  But I know that everybody’s mom would like to get a Mother’s Day Card.  We are going to make one in class, and we want them to look good, because we all love our mommies very much.

        母親節就快要到了，你得想一想要送什麼好禮物給媽媽。許多媽媽喜歡花，也有不少媽媽喜歡巧克力，但是我想每一位媽媽都會喜歡收到一張母親節卡片。我們將在課堂上製作一張母親節卡片，而且要做得很好看，因為我們都非常愛我們的媽媽。

      First, we need to get the card ready.  Fold the paper carefully in half.  Then we are going to paint the cards.  But we aren’t going to paint any pictures, we’re just going to paint some patterns first.  Later, we’ll put some more things on top of the paint after it’s dry.

首先，將卡片準備好，仔細地把紙張對折，然後準備在卡片上彩繪。但是我們並不打算畫上任何圖案，只是先畫一些花樣，等它乾了之後再放一些東西在花樣上頭。

Now let’s get busy!  We have a lot of work to do, and we have to work slowly so we don’t make a big mess.  Look at the designs the children are painting.  Some people are painting lines, and others are painting circles.  And we have to remember to clean the brush when we change colors, so the paints don’t all mix together and look brown and yucky.

讓我們大展身手吧！我們有許多工作要做，俗話說：慢工出細活，這樣才不會把卡片搞砸了。看看孩子們所設計繪畫的圖樣，有些孩子正在畫線條，其他的則是正在畫圓圈圈。同時我們要記得筆刷在換顏色的時候要洗乾淨，這樣子才不會把所有色彩都搞混在一起，顯得烏漆媽黑又難看。

         Here are more students working hard.  We are only painting the outside of the card.  After we paint it, we have something else to do while we wait for the paint to dry.  Everyone is making their cards very pretty for Mom.

　

　

孩子們正在努力製作卡片當中。我們只在卡片外層彩繪，畫好之後，在等待顏料乾掉的同時我們還有其他工作要做。每一位小朋友都把要送給媽媽的卡片製作得非常漂亮精美。

　

Now that everyone is finished painting, we are going to write a poem for the inside of the card.  It is a short poem, and it goes like this:

Roses are red

Violets are blue

You are my Mommy

                        And I love you.

現在每一個孩子都完成繪畫，我們要寫一首詩，是要放在卡片裡的。這是一首簡短的詩，就像這樣：

                              玫瑰是紅色的，

                        紫羅蘭是藍色的，

                        你是我的媽咪，

                        我愛你。

Now everyone has to write the poem.  We are going to write the poem in our writing notebook, and then Teacher Jason will cut out the poem so we can glue it inside our card.  We all want our cards to look great, so we have to write very slowly and carefully.

　

現在每一位孩子都要寫下這首詩。我們先將這首詩寫在筆記簿裡，然後Teacher Jason會將它剪下來，然後貼在卡片的內頁上。我們都想要卡片看起來很棒，所以我們都寫得很慢而且很仔細。

After we finished painting the cards, Teacher Jason wrote “MOM” on everybody’s card in big letters.  Then everyone can color in the letters with crayons.  But we’re still not finished.

當我們完成繪製卡片，Teacher Jason在每個人的卡片上寫上這幾個大寫字母“MOM”，然後每個人在字母裡頭用蠟筆塗上顏色。但是，這樣還不算大功告成喔！

After we do the outside of the card, it’s time to work on the inside.  We carefully glue the poem on the paper, and then use crayons to add a little extra color.

　

我們做好了卡片外層之後，接下來就是要做內頁了。我們小心翼翼地將詩句黏在紙上，然後用蠟筆點綴上一點額外的色彩。

　

　

Now, we’re almost finished.  Teacher Jason has lots of strips of colored paper, and each person can choose the color that looks best on the card.  Then, we glue the two strips of paper on the outside, so the card looks like a present.

　

　

　

現在我們幾乎快要完成了。Teacher Jason有很多長條的色紙，然後每一位孩子可以挑選跟自己卡片最速配的顏色，接著把兩條長紙片黏在卡片外面，讓卡片看起來更像是一個禮物。
Now, there’s one more little thing to do, and we’ll be finished.  There are lots of little paper shapes, and we will glue them on the colored paper.  There are leaves, hearts, and flowers to use.  Everyone wants to use the hearts and flowers, because they love their mommies and know what Mommy likes.

還有一件事情要做，然後我們就完成了。這兒有許多各種形狀的小紙片，我們可以把它們黏在色紙上。我們有葉片、心型和花朵狀紙片可以使用。所有的人都想要用心型和花型的，因為他們愛他們的媽媽，而且知道媽媽喜歡什麼。

Now it’s finished.  It’s ready to give to Mommy.  Can you keep a secret?  Don’t tell your Mom you made this card, and then you can surprise her when you give it to her on Mother’s Day.  I hope that all the Mommies enjoyed their cards.  We worked very hard on them, and I think they looked great!  And I hope that everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day.

現在卡片完成了！可以送給媽咪了！你能夠先保守祕密嗎？不要跟媽媽講你做了一張卡片，然後在母親節那天把卡片送給媽媽，給媽媽一個驚喜。我希望每一位媽咪都喜歡她們的卡片。我們很努力很用心地製作這些卡片，而且我認為卡片看起來真的很棒！同時我也希望每個人都能擁有一個美好的母親節。

☆主題活動：Fun Fun Fun with Fish and Chips(2005年2月∼2005年3月)☆

 This week, we are talking about the United Kingdom.  There are lots of different names for this country.  Just like “Taiwan” is also the “Republic of China.”  Other names for the United Kingdom are “U.K.”, “Great Britain” , and sometimes “England.”  This country is a small island like Taiwan, but it is very far away from here.

Today in class we are going to make “fish and chips.”  They are good to eat together, and lots of people in England like to eat them.  In America, we say “chips” are “french fries.”  But in the U.K., “potato chips” are called “crisps.”  We can use potatoes to make both things, but they are a little different.

Look at these huge potatoes!  They are very big, and that is good because we have a lot of chips to make.  I want to use the biggest potatoes, so I am asking the students to help me choose the best ones.  If we are going to make fish and chips for 22 people, we need a lot of potatoes.  I used 8 big ones for our snack

　

To cut the potatoes, we need to use a knife.  Knives are very useful tools, but they can also be dangerous if we are not careful.  This knife is very sharp, and because it is so big, I think I will cut the potatoes by myself.  I don’t want anybody to get hurt.  And don’t forget: if you drop a knife, don’t try to catch it!  Jump back!

　

To make fish and chips, we need a few more tools.  Of course we need the knife to cut the potatoes.  We also need:

A pot – to cook the french fries (chips) in.

A frying pan – to cook the fish in

A cutting board – to cut the potatoes on

2 stoves – to heat the food and cook it.

And, for eating, we also have some salt, pepper, and ketchup.

The stove needs a gas can.  Help!  I can’t get this thing in the stove!  If I can’t fix it, we can’t cook.  Hmmm…It’s not empty.  I’ll try to fix it one more time…OK. Now it’s fixed.  The stove is finally ready for cooking.

　

Because we are cooking with oil, we need to be careful.  Hot oil can be messy and dangerous.  If we make a mess and get oil on the floor, it will be very slippery.  And before we start cooking, we need to heat up the oil in the pot, because the chips will cook faster if the oil is already hot.

Right now, the oil is not hot yet.  I wanted everyone to see how it looks when it is not hot.  When it gets hot, it will boil and bubble and we will have to stand back and be very careful.

Now we can cut the potatoes.  We have to cut them just the right size.  If we cut them too small, they will cook very quickly but they will be hard to eat with our fingers.  But if we cut them too big, they will take too long to cook and they will also be very soggy.  I want our chips to look like the picture in our book, so I try to cut them the same way.
Try this!  If you eat a raw potato, it does not taste good.  But, if you hold your nose, you can not taste it at all.  Why is that?  Because you also use your nose to taste your food.  If you can’t smell it, you also can’t taste it.  Everybody tried a little piece, but I’m sad to say everyone thought it was yucky.

Now we can cook the chips.  They are cooking nicely in the pot, but we need to stir them around a little bit so that they do not stick together or burn.  We need to use a long metal spoon to stir the chips.  It’s all much too hot to touch, so we also need to be very careful.  Everyone is helping me out a little bit while I get the fish ready to cook.

Now we can cook the fish.  Yikes!  The oil is too hot, and there is a lot of ice on the fish.  When that happens, the oil splatters everywhere and makes a mess.  Oops.  That was my mistake.  Now we need to wait for the oil to cool down a little, and then we can try again.  Most English people like to eat big pieces of fish, but I thought we could just use these little pieces because we shouldn’t eat too much junk food before lunch.

OK.. Now everything is almost ready.  The fish is cooking nicely, and everyone is helping to stir the chips.  Just pick them up and turn them over a little bit…   In just a few more minutes, it will all be finished, and we can try it.

Finally!  Everything is finished, and we can eat!  How does it taste?  Well, there is salt, so it tastes salty.  There is also some pepper, so it tastes a little spicy, too.  And is it good to eat?  Yes, it’s good to eat!  And as soon as we finish our fish and chips, we can eat our lunch.  What a great day!  We’ve been cooking and eating all morning.
