"Technology improves the conditions of our lives, humanities improve the
quality of our lives". Based on this belief, Chaoyang University of
Technology established the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in
August 1997. The University expects the College provides a strong base in
humanities, ethics and skills throughout the University. The College is
composed of four departments (Communication Arts, Applied Foreign Languages,
Early Childhood Development and Education, and Social Work) and two centers
(Center for Teacher Education, and Foreign Language Center). Currently,
Department of Early Childhood Development and Education as well as
Department of Applied Foreign Languages offer the master¡¦s program
(including the regular program and the in-service programs). Besides, the
Department of Senior Citizen Service Management will be set up in 2007, and
one more master¡¦s program will be set up by the Department of Social Work in
2007.
As to the number of faculty, the College now consists of 8 full professors,
14 associate professors, 29 assistant professors, and 25 lecturers. Of
these, 48 hold doctoral degrees and 33 hold master's degrees. Totally, the
number of students in the college is 3,337, including 3,128 undergraduate
students, and 209 graduate students. The Following is a brief description of
the departments under the College.
Department of Communication
Arts
The
Department is the first of its kind in any university of technology in the
R.O.C. It not only possesses an outstanding faculty and first-rate
facilities, but also combines teaching methodologies that give equal
attention to theory and practice and truly attain the educational goal of
both technical and intellectual excellence. Students in the Department have
both the technical and artistic skills that meet the professional needs
today.
The Department's audio and video equipment is identical to the equipment
used in the industry today, and the Department has established cooperative
agreements with a number of well-known media corporations. It provides
practical experience and a background in the humanities to its students
through class training and summer internship. Under these advantageous
conditions, students are exceptionally well-prepared for actual industry
requirements immediately after they graduate.
Department of Applied Foreign Languages
The Department's primary mission is to produce students with high levels of
foreign language skills to meet the needs of the coming era of international
information and communication. Currently the Department offers English,
Japanese, German, and French classes, as well as practical instruction in
business and language specializations. The Department thus offers three
specialized tracks: international business interests, technical translation,
and language teaching. These technical tracks allow the students to use
their skills in the modern language market.
Department
and Graduate Institute of Early Childhood Development and Education
The
Department was founded in 1996. Currently the day school offers a 4-year
undergraduate program and a master's program, and the evening school offers
2-year and 4-year undergraduate programs and an in-service master's program.
The Department has an excellent faculty with a wide variety of early
childhood specializations, and provides an ideal academic environment for
its students. The faculty is characterized by diligence, care, and love, and
actively seeks to promote students' dedication to the ideals of childcare
and education. In addition, the department offers extensive guidance in
Montessori materials and methods to expand students' professional horizons.
The curriculum includes basic subjects such as planning and management of
learning environment and activities for young children, child development,
administration and management of childcare programs, and core subjects such
as ethics for child care professionals and Montessori instructional methods.
It also offers its students the opportunity to obtain certification as
kindergarten teachers through the courses offered by the Center for Teacher
Education, allowing them to enter the job market in a prompt and timely
fashion.
Department of Social
Work
The
Department of Social Work was established in 2000, which aims to educate
excellent and professional social workers. Currently the Department offers
4-year undergraduate program and 4-year undergraduate evening program. The
curriculum includes fundamental courses such as philosophy and ethic of
social work, social welfare and policy, community work, group work,
casework, sociology, psychology, social psychology and human behavior in the
social environment etc. Besides, considering current social problems and
trends in Taiwan, the curriculum will be specialized in the fields of family
social work and NPO (non- profit organization) to cultivate professionals in
social service and delivery. The Department plans to set up master program
in 2007. ¡@
The
Center for Teacher Education
The Center
for Teacher Education of the University was established in 1998. Its
establishment is to realize the Ministry of Education's policy of
diversified teacher training, and to integrate the teaching and research
resources unique to each of the University's departments and institutes to
develop outstanding teachers with profound knowledge and skills in different
fields of specialization and with sound educational concepts. Shortly after
its establishment, the Center began offering a certification program for
kindergarten instructors; and in the 1999 school year, a certification
program for instructors at the secondary school level was offered. The aims
of these programs are as follows.
¡½Kindergarten instructor certification: The goal of the program is to
prepare students to become certified kindergarten instructors, through
course work taught by the University's faculty and practical application of
facilities at the University.
¡½Secondary school instructor certification: The goal of the program is to
prepare students to become certified instructors at the secondary school
level, through course work taught by the University's faculty and practical
application of facilities at the University.
Both programs are open to students who are sophomores or above, and who meet
the program's entrance requirements. Both of the programs are two years
programs. Students are required to complete a minimal 26 credits of course
work (internship included) in order to be certified. Additionally, from the
year 2000 on, a new program is at function. The new program grants the
kindergarten instructor certifications to graduates who hold a bachelor
degree, if they fulfill the requirements of the training program.
Foreign
Language Center
Foreign Language Center¡]FLC¡^, is newly established in August, 2006. The main
goal of FLC is to develop English skills among non-English majors. With
regard to course arrangements, leveling teaching is applied to freshmen to
enhance teaching efficiency. In addition to common courses, some advanced
programs and various English activities
will also be provided by FLC. In this way, students can be competent to use
this lingua franca in their everyday life and future careers, making English
a practical tool. For honorable students,
especially those who will potentially visit our sister universities as
exchange students,
Foreign Language Center will help them improve the English competence so
that they can pursue degrees in English speaking countries.
With distinguishing specialties and different experiences, teachers in FLC
have been devoting their professionalism and passion to teaching in order to
fulfill students¡¦ multiple needs in English learning. The ultimate goal of
Foreign Language Center is to help students become independent and active
learners, enjoying the wonders of foreign languages.
