About the Department
Established in 1994, the Department of Industrial Design at CYUT is the first of its kind for technological universities in greater Taichung area. It aims at providing Taiwan’s more than one million small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with qualified and well trained/educated industrial design specialists, who are pragmatic, professional, responsible and capable of executing all product development related tasks, including product planning, design practices, production and marketing. It is anticipated that our graduates, especially in the case of serving as an industrial designer for SMEs, are able to meet companies’ requirement for a generalist and equipped themselves with the ability of fast response and the attitude of flexibility when facing various environmental changes.
Moreover, owing to cultural & creative industries have become key industries in today’s knowledge economy, to train a cultural & creative designer, in addition to intensive study on culture, history and aesthetics, our students are educated in the realm of creative design centric cultural and aesthetic production via three workshops, namely, ceramics workshop, metal workshop and glass workshop. In so doing, through the process of design education, students cultivate themselves to become a more considerate, observing and macroscopic designer.


Principles of Teaching
To achieve the abovementioned education objective thoroughly and effectively, it is imperative constantly grasping changes of enterprises’ R & D style in planning for our curriculum and the guidelines of teaching, and then adjust the role of an industrial designer appropriately based on the requirement changes detected. In this way, our curriculum and its teaching contents can be evaluated and adjusted, if necessary, accordingly. To well fit the practical requirements of enterprises’ R & D system, in addition to the basic requirements for an industrial designer, our curriculum also involves the training in handling manufacturing technology and cultivating the capability of observing and evaluating market requirements. Therefore, the curriculum basically forms a tripartite structure.

Our teaching guideline (or Our principles of teaching)

Since 2003, our curriculum has been divided into two programs, viz. the “Living Goods Design” program and the “Industrial Product Design” program.

The “Living Goods Design Program” aims at educating industrial designers who are capable of developing culture-specific toys, stationeries, gifts, furniture, domestic and outdoor living goods via fully utilizing our unique ceramics, metal and glass workshops and cooperating with nearby National Taiwan Craft Research Institute (NTCRI) and artists resided in central Taiwan areas. Teaching and development of this program relies heavily on using our ceramics, metal and glass workshops as a basis and cooperating with NTCRI, artists resided in central Taiwan areas and living goods manufacturers to develop Taiwan-flavored living goods.

The “Industrial Product Design Program” focuses on logical training of scientific design methods, integrated computer-aided design and enhancing the ability of applying other technologies, so as to educate industrial designers to satisfy the needs of the industry in 4C, home appliances, medical equipment, sporting goods, sanitary equipment, transportation, electrical tools and hand tools. The abovementioned two programs share some common courses, such as design fundamentals, creative thinking, design and humanities, and management, marketing, planning, etc. Besides, the teaching and development of the Industrial Product Design Program emphasizes the application of scientific design method and information technology.

The department has successively established Computer Aided Design and Analysis Laboratory, Reverse Engineering and Rapid Prototyping Laboratory, Integrated Digital Design Laboratory, Digital Sculpture Laboratory and Virtual Product Development Laboratory. To cope with the new curriculum that will be implemented in academic year 2009, the way of courses grouping and the contents of courses structure were re-evaluated. As a result, the courses are divided into three modules, viz. the Industrial Product Design module, the Cultural Creative Goods Design module and Product Development module.

1. Enlighten students’ potential in creativity with faculty members who have rich practical experience, perceptive insight in society and global view.
2. Expand the collaborative relationships with domestic and foreign universities and research institutes so as to widen students’ view and share resources in teaching, services and research with academic partners.
3. Educate industrial specialists who have deep understandings in technology, culture, marketing and industry, and are creative, practical, pragmatic, willing to do and willing to learn.
4. Sustain and enhance the cooperation and interaction with industry so as to ensure the teaching contents and quality satisfy industry’s needs and improve students’ practical experience and high-quality employment opportunities.
