Taichung, located in
the central part of Taiwan, is a metropolitan area with a number of
rivers distributed throughout out the area. In the transportation
system, bridges play the role as the vital facility of road network.
Generally speaking, traffic jam hardly causes severe traffic problems or
jeopardy to public safety. A major metropolitan city like Taichung has
already built a well-organized road network that helps develope a
convenient transportation system for the people living in the area . Yet
there still lies weakness in metropolitan traffic constructions: the
bridges, for example, serve as the important traffic joints among the
road network, they tend to cause traffic accidents and severe time delay
when damaged. This study aims at the evaluation of structural integrity
of the main bridges in the city. Based on the results of the field
evaluation the bridges are classified according to their current
degradation levels. Finally, the author provides the mid-term and
long-term recommendations for the maintenance and repair work of the
studied bridges. The object and extend of this study
based on the selected bridges that have specific range of width and
length and the evident effects on public transportation and lives. The
author adopts the methods of field inspection with the forms revised
from the references. Using the regulation known as D.E.R.U (Degree,
Extend, Relevancy and Urgency), this study later classifies the bridges
into four categories. For the prioritization of repair work, the study
evaluates the degree, extent and condition of the degradation, the
safety of construction, effectiveness of service, then further
determines the urgency of the repair works. This study eventually
suggests the detailed inspection and/or immediate repair for the most
severely decayed bridges in the study area. Moreover,
this study contains the original analyses of the importance of the
bridge alarm system, safety management, and related emergency rescue
plan in the future. The thesis also provides the imperative data and
references to the timing of the bridge repair, the techniques to prolong
the life of the bridges, and the research of bridge life-cycle in
Taiwan. |
