ºKn(^) The research is conducted based on tests on steel, which is an essential construction material, coated with nickel phosphorous alloy using electroless-plate method. Reinforced concrete samples with the coated steel using 3 types of fine aggregates (river sand, beach sand, and river/beach sand) were prepared and tested under simulated aggravating freeze/thaw cycling circumstances to explore the effects of the coating on physical/chemical properties of the concrete and corrosion potential of the reinforcement steel.
The results of the tests revealed that there is a little difference in electrode potential, which is an indication of corrosion potential, between the coated and uncoated steels. However, results indicated that coated steels exhibit much fewer rusty spots throughout the surface of the steel, and the rust stated to develop at more freeze-thaw cycles than the uncoated steels. This implies that electroless nickel plated steel may have less corrosion potential under freeze/thaw cycling conditions. Moreover, results also revealed that there is no apparent change in bonding strength between the concrete and reinforcement when the coated steels were used.
