History of the Department
¡@

¡@¡@This department was established in 1994 and originally named the Department of Commercial Design. It recruited one class of students into its four-year vocational college program. In the 1995 academic year, the department was renamed the Department of Visual Communications Design. In response to the concept of adult continuing education, the department began accepting students into its two-year vocational college program in the 1996 academic year. During the same year, the Institute was upgraded to the Chaoyang University of Technology and the College of Design was established. The College of Design is comprised of the Department of Visual Communications Design, the Department of Industrial Design, the Department of Architecture, and the Department of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. The Graduate Institute of Design was established during the 2002 academic year and offers programs in Visual Communications and Industrial Design.

¡@¡@From the very beginning, the department has maintained four founding ideals: The classroom as studio model creates an environment where learning and professional practice happen simultaneously. Small classes raise the quality of instruction. A 4-year sequence of computer instruction is appropriate for design talent for the information age. It is important to focus on the development of local culture.
¡@ ¡@
Vision for the future
¡@

¡@¡@Continue to recruit qualified instructors so that students can receive the best kind of care in their education and learn professional-level knowledge, ethics, and techniques.

¡@¡@Upgrade teaching and research facilities and spaces so that instructors and students can obtain good teaching and research results.

¡@¡@Establish a visual design center and increase industry-academia collaborative projects. Offer visual design consultation services to companies in the central region of the country and off-campus internship opportunities to students.

¡@¡@Establish adult continuing education programs to offer refresher courses to professionals in visual communications design and other related fields in central Taiwan.

¡@ ¡@
Focus on local culture and the connection between design and culture.
¡@ ¡@

¡@ Future
¡@
Short-term Objectives
¡@ This Department has a graduate institute which is scheduled to start recruiting students in the 2001 academic year. Currently, it is actively designing and preparing curricula, upgrading its faculty and strengthening its ability in academic research and creative development in order to cultivate high-level designers for the central region of Taiwan.
¡@ ¡@
Long-term Objectives
¡@ We hope to expand our global vision and establish close relationships with design institutes and universities overseas. With local humanistic features as a point of departure, we hope to become an institution for design education with global vision and importance.

We had our first year students in 1994. In 1996, we started our evening school curriculum mainly aimed at those who already worked in the design field and wish to take a higher degree. During the first few years, we build up our reputation through wining various design competitions in Taiwan. In 2002, we have our first year graduate school students. The establishment of graduate program means we are moving forward onto both theoretical and professional in visual communication research. Our current mission of visual communication design education is to integrate possible resources in Central Taiwan, and to apply visual communication design into local industry.

Goal
The Department¡¦s educational goal is to train qualified design personnel with an international vision, sensitive to the times, and familiar with modern digitalized media and equipment, in an environment where the interactions between students and tutors are lively. The Department¡¦s curriculum covers four areas: digital media design, graphic visual design, design management, and humanities. It is an educational environment with both practical and theoretical components, and also meets the needs of global information developments, as well as responding to domestic industry¡¦s needs, strengthening localization, and increasing students¡¦ competitive skills in the current job market.

Graduation Requirement
Four years full-time for Bachelor of Visual Communication Design: Students must complete at least 128 credit points.

Course Content
