Abstract

Music education is a powerful force that has shaped countless lives throughout the world over the millennia.  Through experience as an educator and researcher it has shaped my life as well.

Music Education, Culture, and the Development of Multiple Intelligences in Preschool Children: A Handbook for Teachers and Parents collects much of my work and ongoing study over the past few years.   Specifically, this volume explores what has been a central theme: the connection between music, language and culture.  This work began with my doctoral dissertation at Columbia University Teachers’ College and expands on the themes that I have continued to develop through research in Taiwan.

What follows is an in-depth explanation of this approach and the theory and framework that is used, that of “multiple intelligences.”  This concept can provide parents and educators with a new way of thinking about how their children learn and develop.  This book is meant to serve as a guide, one that helps to open up new worlds and perspectives on education for readers; but also provides a practical manual for implementing new techniques.
